Chapter 1

The Last Lesson

Author: Alphonse Daudet

✍ Introduction to the Author:

Alphonse Daudet (1840–1897) was a French novelist and short story writer. Known for his realistic        and sympathetic portrayals of people and places, Daudet often drew from personal and historical            events. “The Last Lesson” reflects his deep feelings for language, culture, and national identity during a period of political upheaval.

 📖Chapter Summary:

"The Last Lesson" is set during the Franco-Prussian War when France lost the Alsace and Lorraine regions to Prussia (Germany). The story is narrated by Franz, a schoolboy from Alsace, who is usually careless about his studies—especially French.

One day, he is surprised to find his classroom unusually quiet and formal. M. Hamel, his French teacher, announces that it is their last French lesson because the new German rulers have ordered French to be replaced by German in Alsace and Lorraine schools.

Franz realizes how little he knows of his native language and regrets not taking his lessons seriously. M. Hamel, deeply emotional, talks about the importance of language in preserving identity and culture. The story ends with M. Hamel writing “Vive La France!” on the blackboard, a final tribute to their mother tongue.
